Let’s get one thing out of the way first:
Giving great oral sex does not require fitting an entire penis into your mouth.
You do not need to deep throat. You do not need to keep your mouth open as wide as humanly possible. And you definitely do not need to push through jaw pain just because you think that’s what makes a blowjob “good.”
In fact, slowing down, teasing, incorporating your tongue and hands, and changing sensations can make oral sex feel better for your partner while making the experience much easier on you.
And if you deal with TMJ issues, jaw pain, neck tension, or a sensitive gag reflex? I have some extra tricks for you too.
1. Don't Go Big Right Away
Think of oral sex like any other sexual activity: warm-up matters.
Going from zero to opening your mouth as wide as possible can fatigue your jaw pretty quickly, especially if you're prone to jaw pain or tension. Instead, start small. Focus on the head of the penis first.
You can:
- Give gentle kisses.
- Let your lips linger.
- Use your tongue around the head.
- Experiment with light suction.
- Slowly alternate between licking, kissing, and sucking.
Not only does this give your jaw a chance to ease into movement, but it also creates anticipation. And anticipation can be very, very fun.
Remember: deeper isn't automatically better.
You can create plenty of sensation without taking the entire shaft into your mouth.
2. Try the "Melting Popsicle" Technique
This is one of my favorite ways to explain tongue technique. Pretend the penis is a melting popsicle or ice cream cone and you're trying to catch all of the drips before they reach your hand.
Use your tongue to slowly lick:
- Up the shaft
- Down the shaft
- Around the head
- Along the underside
You can alternate broad, flat-tongue licks with smaller, more targeted movements. And your mouth doesn't have to disappear completely from the equation. Try wrapping your lips around part of the shaft and adding gentle suction before going back to licking.
Lick. Kiss. Suck. Repeat.
Changing sensations can be much more interesting than trying to maintain one repetitive movement the entire time.
3. Your Hands Are Part of the Team
Your mouth does not have to do all the work. Seriously. Use your hands.
One of the easiest ways to reduce jaw fatigue is to use your hand around the lower portion of the shaft while your mouth focuses on the head and upper portion. Your hand can move along with your mouth so that the sensations blend together. You can also switch completely to your hands for a little while if your jaw needs a break.
And that's not "cheating." Your partner is still receiving stimulation - you've simply changed the tool you're using to provide it. Think of oral sex as a combination of mouth + tongue + lips + hands, rather than believing your mouth has to carry the entire performance.
4. Play With Rhythm Instead of Just Speed
Faster isn't always better either.
Experiment with:
- Slow strokes followed by faster ones
- Longer pauses
- Light suction followed by firmer suction
- Tongue movements between mouth strokes
- Hands and mouth moving together
- Hands moving while your mouth stays focused around the head
Those changes can build sensation without requiring you to aggressively move your jaw for ten straight minutes. And don't be afraid to pause. A well-timed pause followed by a completely different sensation can actually increase anticipation.
5. Add Lubrication
More friction is not always better friction. Adding a little lubricant can make hand movements glide more smoothly, especially when you're combining your hand with your mouth. And flavored or sensation-enhancing products can make the experience more fun for the person giving oral too.
For example, Sensations is a flavored lubricant that develops a warming sensation with friction, so it can add taste and temperature play while you're switching between licking, sucking, and hand stimulation.
Just remember: whenever you're using a flavored or sensation product, follow the product directions and make sure it's appropriate for how and where you're using it.
6. A Sensitive Gag Reflex Doesn't Mean You Need to "Train" Yourself to Ignore It
Your gag reflex is a protective reflex. You don't win extra blowjob points for fighting it until your eyes are watering. If going deeper immediately triggers gagging, stay shallower and use your hand to stimulate the portion of the shaft that isn't in your mouth.
You can also experiment with products specifically designed to make oral play more comfortable, like Headliner (Great Head). This can be especially helpful because gagging can cause you to tense your jaw, throat, neck, and shoulders, which isn't exactly helpful if you're already prone to muscle tension.
And remember: Deep throating is one technique. It is not the definition of good oral sex.
7. Give Your Jaw a Break Without Stopping the Fun
Your jaw getting tired doesn't mean oral sex needs to end. Change activities.
You could switch to:
- Hand stimulation
- Licking
- Kissing
- Massage
- A stroker
- A sleeve
- Another type of sexual activity entirely
One option is a small sleeve like the GoodHead Helping Head Mini Sleeve, which can add a completely different texture while giving your mouth a break.
Or bring vibration into the equation with something like the Vush SOL Vibrating Stroker. You can use it with your hand while kissing or licking other areas, then return to oral whenever you feel ready.
Honestly, this can make the experience more interesting anyway. Rather than doing the exact same movement from beginning to end, you're creating different chapters.
Blowjob Tips for TMJ, Jaw Pain & Neck Tension
If you already deal with TMJ problems or jaw pain, oral sex may require a little more creativity. Technically, TMJ is the temporomandibular joint itself, while TMD describes disorders affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles - but most people casually use "TMJ" when describing the condition.
TMD can involve jaw pain, stiffness, difficulty opening your mouth, and pain that extends into the face or neck. The goal here isn't to force your jaw to tolerate more. It's to figure out how to create pleasure without aggravating it.
8. Don't Force Your Mouth Open Wider
This one is important. If opening wide hurts, don't push through it.
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research recommends avoiding extreme jaw movements for people experiencing TMD symptoms. That means techniques requiring prolonged maximum opening probably aren't going to be your jaw's favorite activity.
Instead: Mouth on the tip. Hand on the shaft.
You can still provide plenty of stimulation without forcing the entire penis into your mouth.
9. Relax Your Jaw Before You Start
If gentle massage normally feels good for your jaw, try doing a little beforehand. You can gently massage the muscles around your jaw and cheeks and intentionally notice whether you're clenching.
Gentle stretching and massage are among the conservative strategies healthcare professionals may recommend for TMD symptoms, although anyone with an existing TMD treatment plan should follow the exercises recommended specifically for them rather than aggressively stretching on their own.
The key word here is gentle. You're trying to relax the area, not see how far you can crank your jaw open.
10. Pay Attention to Your Neck and Shoulders Too
Sometimes the problem isn't only your jaw. TMD can be associated with neck pain, and poor positioning may add additional strain. So before you get into position, ask yourself:
Am I comfortable?
Try to avoid:
- Hunching your shoulders
- Craning your neck forward
- Holding your head at an awkward angle
- Supporting your body in a position you can't comfortably maintain
- Clenching your jaw while trying to reach your partner
Use pillows. Change positions. Have your partner reposition. There's no award for choosing the most physically inconvenient blowjob position possible.
11. Consider a Massage First
And here's a suggestion that benefits everyone involved: Ask your partner for a massage first.
If your shoulders and neck tend to carry tension, spend a few minutes relaxing before oral sex even starts. Massage isn't a cure for a jaw disorder, but turning the experience into a longer warm-up can help you slow down, relax, and notice when you're unconsciously tensing your body.
Also? Your partner rubbing your shoulders while knowing exactly where this is heading isn't exactly a bad form of foreplay.
12. Use Toys and Sleeves as Your Relief Pitchers
If your jaw starts saying absolutely not, listen to it. Grab a stroker or sleeve.
Something like the GoodHead Helping Head Mini Sleeve can provide texture and stimulation with significantly less involvement from your mouth.
A vibrating option like the Vush SOL Vibrating Stroker can completely change the sensation again.
You can even combine toys with oral play:
- Use the toy lower on the shaft while your mouth stays near the head.
- Take a break from oral and use the toy.
- Return to oral later.
There are no rules saying a blowjob has to consist of uninterrupted mouth-on-penis stimulation from beginning to end.
13. Pain Is Your Cue to Change Something
Muscle fatigue and pain aren't the same thing.
If you're experiencing jaw pain, locking, difficulty opening or closing your mouth, or persistent symptoms, don't treat oral sex like exposure therapy and keep pushing through it.
Jaw stiffness, limited movement, locking, and pain are recognized symptoms of TMD, and persistent symptoms are worth discussing with a dentist, physician, or physical therapist experienced in treating jaw disorders.
Sex should not require injuring yourself for someone else's pleasure.
The Biggest Blowjob Tip? Stop Thinking Your Mouth Has to Do Everything.
Great oral sex isn't determined by how deep you can go. It isn't determined by how long you can keep your mouth open. And it certainly isn't determined by how sore your jaw is afterward.
Some of the best oral techniques involve combining:
Tongue + lips + suction + hands + lubricant + toys + teasing + communication.
Use what feels good. Switch techniques. Take breaks. Ask your partner what they like.
And if your jaw needs a little help?
Work smarter, not harder.
Your TMJ will thank you.
